What Are the New Alien Registration Requirements?

A close up of a hand filling out alien registration paperwork. Starting April 11, 2025, the U.S. government has implemented a new mandatory registration requirement for certain non-immigrants residing in the United States. This initiative, managed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), ensures compliance with updated immigration regulations and helps maintain accurate biographic information records.

Understanding the New Registration Requirement

Announced on March 6, 2025, the updated Form G-325R, “Biographic Information (Registration),” became available for submissions. The formal rule underpinning this requirement was published in the Federal Register on March 12, 2025, officially taking effect on April 11, 2025.

Who Needs to Register?

Registration is mandatory for the following groups:

  • Non-immigrants who did not provide fingerprints when applying for a visa or upon entering the U.S.
  • Children who turn 14 while residing in the U.S. Parents or guardians must complete their registration within 30 days of the child’s 14th birthday.
  • Individuals uncertain of their registration status should register proactively to ensure compliance.

Who Is Exempt from Registration?

Registration is not required for:

  • Individuals issued Form I-94 upon legal entry into the U.S.
  • Those who have previously submitted fingerprints during their immigration or visa process.
  • Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card holders).

Why Registration Matters

Adhering to this requirement is essential to:
